sunita williams rescue
Sunita Williams' ISS stay extended; SpaceX Crew Dragon will bring her back in Feb 2025 after Boeing's Starliner issues delayed return.
NASA astronaut Sunita Williams and her colleague Butch Wilmore are currently extending their stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS) after facing unexpected delays in their return journey. Initially scheduled to return via Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, their mission was extended due to technical malfunctions in the Starliner, including thruster and helium leak issues. Consequently, NASA decided to deploy SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission as a safer alternative.
The SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule successfully docked at the ISS in September 2024, providing a new means of transport for the stranded astronauts. However, logistical and operational considerations mean that their return is now slated for February 2025. In the meantime, Williams, who has assumed command of the ISS, is contributing to critical research and maintenance tasks, maximizing the scientific outcomes of her extended mission.
